Proprietary Blend
95 points from Antonio Galloni.
“Tasted from double magnum, the 1982 Pergole Torte is a wine of real impact. For starters, the 1982 has a level of mid-palate sweetness and intensity that stands out after the 1980. Dried rose petal, autumn leaves, kirsch and dried red stone fruits all lift from the glass. Here, too, the wine has reached its peak of maturity. If well stored, the 1982 will drink well for another few years because of its depth and creamy, layered personality. This is an especially fine bottle of the 1982. Of course, 1982 remains a sentimental vintage in Italy because it is the year Italy won the World Cup in Spain, defeating archrivals Germany and Brazil along the way. Martino Manetti adds that this is the first vintage he remembers having tasted from cask and the wine that he knew he would spend the rest of his life at the estate.”
“This bottle is nearly impossible to find today. The very rare 1982 Le Pergole Torte is a classic wine that delivers amazing intensity and staying power. Marino Manetti characterizes the 1980 vintage as "cold but soft" and this vintage as "warm but hard." That makes sense when you consider the fragrant, floral and fruity elements of the bouquet. Those tones are immediate, and they pull you in with enthusiasm. Yet the mouthfeel is firm and focused. This is a complete wine, with expressive honey, balsam herb, rosemary, laurel leaf, crème de cassis and cherry liqueur. Rosewood and sandalwood also make brief appearances, as do saline or salty tones. I could venture that this is one of the best-preserved expressions of Sangiovese from the 1982 vintage in existence today.”

Montevertine is a wine producer in Tuscany. It traces its beginnings to back to 1967, when Sergio Manetti bought a vacation home in Chianti and planted two hectares (five acres) of vines with the intention of making some wine for friends and family. The first vintage in 1971 was such a success that Manetti took a few bottles to the Vinitaly wine show in Venice where the wine garnered such a positive reaction that Manetti made winemaking his new career.
Montevertine wines are often thought of as Super Tuscans, although none of the wines use any foreign grape varieties often associated with the category, like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. All Montevertine wines are Sangiovese-dominant, with small amounts of Colorino and Canaiolo – making them classic Chianti blends.
