1985 Caymus Vineyards Special Selection Cabernet
Caymus Special Selection is the flagship wine of the Wagner family and is comprised of the very best barrels of the vintage. This wine is not produced in difficult years. Caymus Napa Valley is more representative of a standard Cabernet of Napa Valley, as it is a bit less precocious than the Special Selection, but still delivers big. Caymus prides itself on producing wines that are as approachable in youth as well at maturity. Both the “Napa Valley” and “Special Selection” Cabernets are produced under the winemaking hand of Chuck Wagner.

Rating RP95 - The Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon which spends significant time in oak can be one of California's most riveting wines. First made in 1975 there have been some exceptionally concentrated powerful wines that are still young and evolving i.e the 1978 1976 and 1975. The decade of the eighties produced less profound Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignons with the exception of the 1984 and 1985. Since then the wine has moved to less of a blockbuster style with the emphasis on more elegance without sacrificing the wine's richness and intensity. As for the 1985 Special Selection it is a monumental effort from this winery. The predominant characteristic of any wine that spends three years or more in small casks would normally be oak but it is a tribute to the concentration of Caymus's Special Selection that while the oak is there it plays a supporting rather than overwhelming role. This dark ruby/purple-colored wine is closed and less flattering than other recent Special Selections. The intriguing bouquet of minerals licorice road tar blackcurrants and smoky oak is fabulously enticing. The wine seems to ooze with a jammy concentration of fruit yet it is admirably supported by good acidity and plenty of tannin in the finish. Like most of Caymus's Special Selections it will be hard to resist but having cellared many of these wines since the 1975 I can say they age magnificently.
