Bordeaux Blend · Pauillac
100 points from Robert Parker.
“Tasted several times, shining at the 1990 horizontal when first encountered in March 2000. Next at the Farr 89 v 90 in September 2004, a perfect bottle. A very dense, powerful nose of black fruit, graphite, cedar and pencil-lead. A beautiful palate with superb concentration and acidity. A mass of ripe black fruit but with a freshness that cuts through everything. Focused, harmonious with seamless tannins. This will needs a few years to show its strength, but what distinguishes this wine is the persistency, the grip, the refusal of the taste to leave the palate. Awesome. Then in December 2004 where it was "Opulent yet regal and refined." At the Latour/Petrus vertical in November 2005. Certainly some maturity on the rim: thin brick colour. A stunning nose: liquorice, freshly ground coffee a little chestnut. Very intense and concentrated. Very dense tannins with a very sweet, Pomerol-like, raisined mid-palate. An extrovert wine, flamboyant but utterly enjoyable with masses of potential.”
“Tasting the 1990 Latour is like running into a long-lost friend. Still dark, deep and spectacularly flamboyant, the 1990 possesses remarkable textural richness from the very first taste. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of pencil shaving, dark fruit, chocolate, licorice and spice flavors, but more than anything else, the 1990 is a wine of pure and total voluptuousness. While I never think of wine as a competition, the 1990 is quite a bit more complex, layered and intriguing than the 1982 served alongside it at the same charity dinner. Its longevity will ultimately be determined by the quality of the cork and storage conditions, as the wine has several decades of truly exceptional drinking still to offer. In a word: magnificent!”
“This is one of my favorite wines ever. Full-bodied, with layers of silky fruit and masses of currant, mineral and berry character. Amazing. It's a wine with perfect structure, perfect strength. It's 1961 Latour in modern clothes. It's hard not to drink it now.”

Château Latour is one of Bordeaux's – and the world's – most famous wine producers. It is situated in the southeast corner of the Pauillac commune on the border of Saint-Julien, in the Médoc region. Rated as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has become one of the most sought-after and expensive wine producers on the planet, and produces powerfully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines capable of lasting many decades.
The site has been occupied since 1331, with a fort and garrison to guard the estuary. Several smallholdings began to grow vines, and wine from the site gained recognition from Montaigne as early as the 16th Century. The original tower no longer exists; the famous tower featured on the label was designed as a pigeon roost and built around 1620.
