Château Latour is one of Bordeaux's – and the world's – most famous wine producers. It is situated in the southeast corner of the Pauillac commune on the border of Saint-Julien, in the Médoc region. Rated as a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has become one of the most sought-after and expensive wine producers on the planet, and produces powerfully structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines capable of lasting many decades.
The site has been occupied since 1331, with a fort and garrison to guard the estuary. Several smallholdings began to grow vines, and wine from the site gained recognition from Montaigne as early as the 16th Century. The original tower no longer exists; the famous tower featured on the label was designed as a pigeon roost and built around 1620.

| Rating | 96 RP - 1990 Chateau Latour Bordeaux Magnum - Wine of the Year! Unquestionably the 1990 is the finest most archetypical Latour since the 1982 and 1970. This monumental wine signals a return to the more forceful opaquely colored powerful brute-like strength style for which Latour was famous during most of this century. The flirtation intentional or otherwise with a lighter style of wine is not apparent in this blockbuster. The 1990 exhibits tight but highly promising aromas of minerals roasted nuts and super-ripe rich cassis fruit. It is an exceptionally powerful wine with massive intensity plenty of glycerin as well as extraordinary extract and mouth-searing tannins that explode on the palate. Along with Margaux and Petrus Latour is a strong favorite for the wine of the vintage! A triumph! RP |

| Antonio Galloni Rating | 98 AG - Tasting the 1990 Latour is like running into a long-lost friend. Still dark, deep and spectacularly flamboyant, the 1990 possesses remarkable textural richness from the very first taste. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of pencil shaving, dark fruit, chocolate, licorice and spice flavors, but more than anything else, the 1990 is a wine of pure and total voluptuousness. While I never think of wine as a competition, the 1990 is quite a bit more complex, layered and intriguing than the 1982 served alongside it at the same charity dinner. Its longevity will ultimately be determined by the quality of the cork and storage conditions, as the wine has several decades of truly exceptional drinking still to offer. In a word: magnificent! |
