2001 Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon - 99 pts!

Shafer Vineyards is a family-owned wine producer in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley. It is particularly known for its Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, regarded as one of the very finest wines in California. With the first wines appearing in 1978, Shafer Vineyards is one of the founding estates of – and a benchmark in quality for – the Stags Leap District AVA. The scores for Hillside Select have been incredibly consistent in the 97 to 100 point range.

Shafer has around 140 acres of vines in the Stags Leap District, spread out across several vineyards. The Hillside Estate vineyard has shallow, free-draining soils tha produce small, intensly flavored berries. The best blocks are used to make the Hillside Select, a plummy, cherry-laden wine with ripe tannins that will age well for a decade or more.

Rating 99 RP - Shafer's flagship wine is the 2000 case cuvee of Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 32 months in 100% new French oak prior to bottling it is one of the world's greatest Cabernet Sauvignons. Like many of the top wines of the vintage the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select has closed down but it reveals impressive potential. Its dense purple color is accompanied by an exquisite bouquet of charcoal sweet oak black currant liqueur and graphite. Full-bodied and powerful with superb intensity length persistence purity and texture it should either be decanted for several hours in advance or given another 2-4 years of bottle age. Drink it over the following 20-25 years. Shafer Vineyards one of the most impeccably run wineries in the world is a wonderful family operation that deserves all the success they have earned.
