2002 Peter Michael La Carriere Chardonnay
One of the most exciting in California, this beautiful winery is owned by Englishman Sir Peter Michael. When he launched this winery, Michael had the foresight originally to hire the brilliant Helen Turley to oversee the winemaking. The current vineyard/winemaking team, Nicolas Morlet whom took over from his brother Luc, shares Ms. Turley's winemaking philosophy.

The present as well as upcoming releases are irrefutably brilliant wines. Peter Michael produces amazing single vineyard Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc as well. Peter Michael Winery remains a family-owned estate that is now run by Peter's son Paul. Only a small number of cases reach the retail market as the majority are set aside for the mailing list and long-term restaurant clientele.

Rating 95 -  I was blown away by the 1,480-case cuvee of 2002 Chardonnay La Carriere. This French-styled offering is made from a vineyard planted in soils filled with white volcanic ash, and is aged completely in Louis Latour barrels. It possesses an exquisite liquid minerality as well as gorgeous aromas of citrus oils intermixed with such exotic tropical fruits as guava and passion fruit. Full-bodied, with dazzling palate penetration, fine balance, and an extraordinary, layered, multidimensional feel, this is one of the single greatest Chardonnays I have recently tasted. It is a brilliant blend of French finesse with California power that should drink well for 5-7 years, possibly longer. RP
