2003 Saxum Bone Rock Vineyard Syrah - 96 pts!
Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Grenache, Syrah, and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, sunny days, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields low, picking the fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. We respect our land and farm everything sustainably without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Because our vine’s roots penetrate deep through the fissures in the calcareous soil irrigation is rarely needed. Production is kept at 5000 – 6000 cases a year divided between nine different cuvees, Broken Stones, James Berry Vineyard, G2 Vineyard, Bone Rock, Rocket Block, Booker Vineyard, Paderewski Vineyard, Heart Stone Vineyard, and Terry Hoage Vineyard.

Rating RP96 - More sweet, ripe and up-front, with a downright sexy profile, the 2003 James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock checks in as a blend of 88% Syrah, 8% Grenache and 4% Mourvedre. From a hot vintage and a time when producers were pushing on the ripeness scale, this blockbuster pulls it off in style and offers up loads of sweet blackberry and kirsch fruit, dried flowers, incense, garrigue and licorice-like aromas and flavors. Showing tons of sweet fruit on the palate, with full-bodied richness and depth, sweet tannin and a great finish, it's made in an unabashedly pedal-to-the-metal style that won't appeal to everyone, but I'm a fan. It should continue to put a smile on everyone’s face for another 3-5 years. A blend of 88% Syrah 8% Grenache and 4% Mourvedre the 2003 Bone Rock James Berry Vineyard which will not be released until the fall is a structured and broodingly backward offering. It boasts an inky/purple color in addition to classic aromas of blackberry liqueur camphor pain grille and subtle notions of Provencal herbs and pepper. Full-bodied with tremendous richness great balance and sweet tannin this stunning marvelously concentrated wine should benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and last for 12-15. The 2003s were bottled about seven weeks before my visit but I could hardly complain about the fact they weren't "showing." I highly recommend that wine enthusiasts who love Rhone Ranger wines pay a visit to the James Berry Vineyard one of the true grand cru sites in the region. 325 cases made. RP
