2009 Williams Selyem Precious Mountain Pinot Noir
It began in the late 1970s, initially as a garage project by Ed Selyem and Burt Williams in Forestville, a community in Sonoma County. In 1981 the pair – who were neighbors – officially named their project Hacienda Del Rio and established it as a legal winery. Two years later, the release of their first commeSOTTrcial vintage (1981) coincided with a cease-and-desist order from Hacienda Winery, leading them to change their name to Williams Selyem.

Williams Selyem found its success buying and bottling single-vineyard wines, with Pinot Noir as the focus. Single-vineyard wines were not new to California, but the first for Williams Selyem was its 1985 Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir.

While Pinot Noir dominates production, Williams Selyem also makes a small amount of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and a Port-style fortified dessert wine. These offerings vary in production from year to year but many also carry single-vineyard designations.

Robert Parker Rating The 2009 Pinot Noir Precious Mountain Vineyard is the most stern and angular of the Sonoma Coast Pinots. Firm yet well-integrated tannins support a core of dark red fruit. Today the wine comes across as very tight, but if the tannins soften, it could be considerably more interesting.
Antonio Galloni Rating 94 AG - Bright ruby-red. Seductive aromas of red berries, rose oil and five-spice powder, with a lively mineral element adding energy and lift. Juicy, vibrant and pure, with concentrated flavors showing a range of red fruits and a musky note of rhubarb. Finishes impressively clean and brisk, with excellent depth and plenty of flavor impact. Develops a wild, herbal-spicy character with air.
Wine Spectator Rating This Pinot mixes subtle, caressing plum and raspberry flavors with a firm backbone of acidity and tannins. Medium-bodied and cleansing.
