2009 Williams Selyem Rochioli Riverblock Pinot Noir
It began in the late 1970s, initially as a garage project by Ed Selyem and Burt Williams in Forestville, a community in Sonoma County. In 1981 the pair – who were neighbors – officially named their project Hacienda Del Rio and established it as a legal winery. Two years later, the release of their first commeSOTTrcial vintage (1981) coincided with a cease-and-desist order from Hacienda Winery, leading them to change their name to Williams Selyem.

Williams Selyem found its success buying and bottling single-vineyard wines, with Pinot Noir as the focus. Single-vineyard wines were not new to California, but the first for Williams Selyem was its 1985 Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir.

While Pinot Noir dominates production, Williams Selyem also makes a small amount of Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and a Port-style fortified dessert wine. These offerings vary in production from year to year but many also carry single-vineyard designations.

Robert Parker Rating The 2009 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard is a big, burly wine loaded with dark fruit. This is one of the richer wines in this lineup, and needs at least another year in bottle for some of the baby fat to melt off. Spices, licorice and dried flowers wrap around the dense, muscular finish.
Antonio Galloni Rating 95 AG - Vivid ruby. Christmas spices, red berries and incense on the nose, with an exotic note of orange peel adding complexity. Sappy strawberry and raspberry preserve flavors are brightened by tangy minerality and complicated by a vanilla bean quality, with fine-grained tannins adding grip. Gains weight with air but remains lively and precise. The clean, nervy finish boasts outstanding clarity and spicy persistence.
Wine Spectator Rating Very rich and concentrated, this delivers layered flavors built around ripe plum, wild berry and black cherry, joined by wilted rose and spicy aromatics that are still a little diffuse, yet offer plenty of depth and complexity.
