Sine Qua Non is one of California's most famous wine producers. Based just north of Los Angeles in Ventura County, and with most of its vineyards in Santa Barbara, it eschews the usual image of top California wine as being only from Napa Valley. That is not the only thing eschewed at Sine Qua Non – the same wine is rarely made more than once, turning the idea of the American icon wine on its head.
Next of Kyn is the newest venture of Manfred and Elaine Krankl, the couple behind the cult winery Sine Qua Non, based on California's Central Coast. The always innovative and envelope-pushing Krankls say they named their new label Next of Kyn because although related to SQN, it is nevertheless its own new enterprise. They say they also hope that one day one of their five children will take over Next of Kyn, making it a part of the SQN family in the most fundamental way. The 2007 Next of Kyn was their first vintage, and the Krankls say they will not necessarily have an annual release. It will depend on such factors as the available grape harvest. The 2007 is 92% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 2% Roussanne, most of which came from their own very small parcel in the Santa Rita Hills. The wine is released only to the Krankl's mailing list.

Rating | 97+ RP - The 2013 Cumulus Vineyard #7 is blended of 45% Syrah, 29% Grenache, 15% Petite Sirah, 5% Mourvèdre, 4.5% Touriga Nacional and 1.5% Rossanne, using 58% whole clusters. It sports a deep garnet-purple color with a sexy spiced plums, black cherry coulis and blackberry tart-laced nose accented by hints of tea, dried Provence herbs, mocha, spice box and eucalypt. The bold, powerful, outspoken palate delivers concentrated black fruits and savory layers framed by firm yet fine-grained, velvety tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with lingering baking spice and mineral notions. Full and fresh with plenty of spices and wonderful length. RP |
