2015 Le Pin Bordeaux - 99 Pts!

Le Pin is a tiny 2.7-hectare (6-acre) property in the Pomerol district of Bordeaux. It was created in 1979 by the Thienpont family (owners of nearby Vieux Château Certan), and quickly rose to prominence to vie for the title of most expensive wine in the world.

The 100 percent Merlot wine is extremely concentrated and lush; it can often be drunk young but is best with a decade of aging.

The Le Pin vineyard is south-facing and sits on well-drained gravel and sand soils which give extremely low yields. There is also a small amount of Cabernet Franc planted. However, this not used in the Le Pin wine, and is gradually being replaced by Merlot.

Le Pin is named after two pine trees at the vineyard. There is no true château on the property, though a new winery was opened in 2011, replacing an old farmhouse basement.

Rating 98 RP - 2001 Le Pin Bordeaux - 98 Pts! Once again Le Pin is the leading candidate for the sexiest kinkiest most exotic wine of the vintage. Aromas and flavors of overripe black fruits intermixed with coconut vanilla toast and espresso beans are present. A tremendous effort this 500-case cuvee one of Bordeaux's original garage operations is even better in 2001 than it was in 2000. Its deep ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of creme de cassis cherry liqueur plums licorice caramel and sweet toast. This flamboyant opulently textured rich concentrated Pomerol is a brilliant success as well as one of the wines of the vintage for 2001. Its low acidity and extraordinary ripeness suggest early drinkability but it has proven it can last for 18-20 years. RP

Robert Parker Rating 99 RP - Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Le Pin hits the dance floor with a completely gregarious nose of plum preserves, blackberry tart and wild blueberries, boldly accented by suggestions of Chinese five spice, cigar boxes, menthol and violets plus an earthy waft of underbrush. Full-bodied, concentrated, muscular and earthy with a firm backbone of exquisitely ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, it has an incredibly long finish featuring exotic spice and mineral layers.
Antonio Galloni Rating 93 AG - The 2015 Le Pin is a vintage that has been a bit variable over the years. Now, at ten years old, it has a delightful raspberry- and strawberry-scented bouquet. However, as I asserted before, this is not the most complex showing that Jacques Thienpont has overseen, something that is exposed by juxtaposition against its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a savory entry, supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a meaty tincture emerging toward the placid finish. It doesn't want to create a fuss. This drinks well, though there are better Le Pins from that decade.
Wine Spectator Rating 97 WS - This delivers a rich torrent of steeped fig, black currant and blackberry compote flavors, melding with a range of bramble, dried anise and singed alder notes. Offers ample grip thanks to a buried graphite edge. This brims with juicy energy, and the fruit seems nearly boundless.
