Hay algo casi eclesiástico en la visita a la bodega de Giacomo Conterno al pie de Monforte d’Alba. Al cruzar sus puertas, uno atraviesa inmediatamente un umbral imaginario hacia un mundo espiritual y aleccionador. La bodega tiene la sensación de una vasta catedral con techos altísimos y espacios abiertos. Impecables barricas de roble, cada una hermosamente barnizada, bordean el perímetro de la bodega como una sucesión de pequeñas capillas familiares.
Roberto Conterno se desliza lenta y constantemente por el suelo de baldosas como si fuera un sacerdote perdido en un momento contemplativo de oración. Limpia cuidadosamente las gotas que quedan en los grifos con un pañuelo blanco que lleva a su lado. La cata oficial de su vino se realiza con la precisión ceremonial y la intensidad religiosa de una Primera Comunión. Y, al igual que cuando concluye la misa, hay una sutil sensación de alivio cuando finalmente uno vuelve a salir a la luz del sol.
