2005 卡本內蘇維濃, 康布斯維爾早在 1982 年，約翰首次造訪 Haut Brion。就他生命中的重要時刻而言，這絕對是其中之一。他在那裡獲得了幾次真正的靈光乍現，其中一項就與橡木桶有關。他品嚐過大部分的一級酒莊酒款，但始終認為 Haut Brion 的酒香最迷人，而且每年的年份都一如是地優雅。深知葡萄酒的香氣有多少來自橡木桶，他意識到這些酒莊擁有自家桶廠，確實掌握了關鍵。
多年來，他與許多在美國及歐洲的現有桶匠交流，希望透過自家的訂製桶計畫，發展出屬於 Caldwell 的風格。但當你與商業桶廠合作，且在任何年份都得面對五六家不同的供應商時，幾乎不可能得到完全符合心意的成果。
